Created by Keisuke Itagaki, Grappler Baki is one of the famous and iconic manga of Japan. And in June 2018, an anime adaptation of the classic manga debuted on Netflix. To date, the anime series has three seasons consisting of 39 episodes. Toshiki Hirano directs the show for TMS Entertainment, and Tatsuhiko Urahara writes it.
According to schedule, the third season had a release date in June this year. Yet, because of the pandemic, many doubted that the new season would keep its initial time. However, Netflix was able to premiere the latest season on 4 June 2020, as planned. Also, like season two, the recent season features 13 episodes. Fans can watch it right now on Netflix.
Most of the cast from the previous season returned in the third season of Baki. Therefore, Nobunaga Shimazaki reprised the role of the titular protagonist, Baki. Also, joining him was Yoshihisa Kawahara as Katsumi and Sora Amamiya playing Kozue. Plus, others such as Kenjiro Tsuda (Sikorsky), Rikiya Koyama (Retsu) were back to voice their respective characters.
(Spoilers ahead) As we expected, the third season of Baki is ripe with thrilling fight scenes and intense drama. In it, Baki enters the famed Raitai Tournament. And there, he fights and wins against multiple enemies without much difficulty. However, it seems like his victories come at a price.
Throughout the season, we see Baki embracing more of his dark side as he prepares to challenge his father. He also acts indifferently towards Kozue, his girlfriend, going as far as letting her get close to Mohammad Alai Jr. Because of this, he starts distancing from his humanity and becomes distant from Kozue. Moreover, the five inmates are also getting ready for their bout against him. It seems like our protagonist will have to face more challenges before going mano-a-mano with his father.
The story follows Baki Hanma, a fighter. He strives to surpass his father and take the throne of the world’s strongest warrior. And with that goal in mind, he trains and fights various other fighters around the globe. In his journey, others also join him and fight by his side. Throughout the series, viewers see Baki evolving into a better fighter while simultaneously ongoing a rapid change in personality.
Although there isn’t much info available right now, we are quite confident about season four. The show usually splits the seasons into two cours (parts), which means that the second part of the current season will come. However, we don’t know when it’ll arrive. At the moment, with everything considered, season four will hit the screens sometime next year or the year after. As per reports, the English dub of the third season will premiere late this year or in early 2021. Until then, stay tuned.
