How to use Aalto VPN?

Whether you’re working on a university project or just want to stream your favorite Finnish show from abroad, using the Aalto VPN keeps your connection secure and opens up access to Aalto University resources from anywhere. Let’s dive in and learn how to use it—step by step!

What is Aalto VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It’s like a secret tunnel between your device and Aalto’s network. Everything you send and receive goes through this tunnel—safe, secure, and just between you and Aalto University.

Aalto VPN lets you:

  • Access internal resources like research databases and intranet services
  • Use services like licensed software and printers remotely
  • Work remotely with the same access you’d have on campus

Before You Begin

First things first! Make sure you have:

  • An active Aalto username and password
  • Admin rights to install software on your computer
  • An internet connection (obviously!)

Step-by-step: Set Up Aalto VPN

1. Download the VPN Client

Aalto uses a service called FortiClient. Here’s what to do:

  1. Visit download.aalto.fi
  2. Select your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux)
  3. Download and install FortiClient VPN

2. Configure FortiClient

Once installed, open FortiClient and follow these steps:

  1. Click on “Configure VPN”
  2. Choose “SSL-VPN” as the connection type
  3. Enter the following info:
  • Connection Name: Aalto VPN
  • Remote Gateway: vpn.aalto.fi
  • Save your settings
  • 3. Connect to Aalto VPN

Now for the fun part—logging in!

    1. Open FortiClient
    2. Select the Aalto VPN profile
    3. Enter your Aalto username and password
    4. Click “Connect”

If your info is correct, you’re now connected to Aalto’s network!

    4. Disconnect When Done

Finished working or studying? Good job! But don’t forget to disconnect when you’re done:

    1. Go back to FortiClient
    2. Click “Disconnect”

This keeps the connection secure and frees up capacity for others.

    Troubleshooting Tips

Things go wrong—we get it. Here’s how to fix common problems:

    • Problem: Can’t connect? Solution: Double-check your login and password.
    • Problem: VPN is slowing you down? Solution: Only use it when needed.
    • Problem: Still stuck? Solution: Contact Aalto IT support at it@aalto.fi

When Should You Use Aalto VPN?

Not everything needs the VPN. Here’s a quick guide:

    • YES: Accessing Aalto file servers, library databases, MATLAB licenses
    • NO: Browsing public websites or watching cat videos

    Extra Tips and Tricks

    • Use shortcuts: Pin FortiClient to your taskbar or dock for quick access
