Krystal Sutherland wrote a novel named Our Chemical Hearts. Later on, Richard Tanne took the inspiration and directed it in a movie. In June 2016, Awesomeness Films acquired the screen rights of Chemical Hearts. Amazon Studios released it on August 21, 2020. Besides, the film did not have a very extensive or awful review. It stayed in between the ratings.

After reaching an end, you will realise that their love doomed from the start. In between, Grace highlighted a few lines of Neruda’s Love Sonnet XVII,” I love you in the same way, one likes to dark things. Quite in secret, between those shadows and souls”. It took moments for Henry and Grace to understand what was always there.

 Henry and Grace Break Up

There was one secret which Henry realised after visiting Grace’s house. Grace lives with her dead boyfriends family, sleep in his room, wearing his clothes, and remembers him all time. Despite knowing the fact that Grace could not forget him, she wanted to move on. And Henry is all set to accept her with all her memories and past.

But while kissing, Henry realises that the kiss was not ‘just a kiss’, but there was feeling, which we call as “love”. He asks her that if she doe not loves him, then how he can feel it. Unfortunately, Henry, at that moment, realises that she will not love him the way Henry loves her. And that was the moment when he breaks.

Ending Explained

Grace was the first person, with whom Henry has fallen in love. However, Henry’s love story is different from what he idealised. He thought of a more romantic love story as of like novels and movies. In contrary, Grace is still struggling by the tragic loss of Dom’s accidents. She has already suffered every aspect of a love life. The love experience, the ‘being in love feeling’, and alas a tragic loss, which in general every love story brings. But unfortunately, it takes time to overcome the trauma.

At the end of the movie, they both understood each other well. At last, Grace confronts Henry, that he was one a healer for her. She sought his help to come out from her past. Henry made her feel alive and back to life. Despite a relationship, Grace knows that she won’t be able to forget Dom. And deep down, Henry is aware of the fact that Grace would never be able to love him like she loved Dom. Sometimes people’s past has a very deep and intense stronghold on the mind and heart of the person. She still lives in his house, to feel him around, she wears his cloth to feel his essence. And hence Henry and Grace broke up.

Friendship After Breakup

Suddenly one day, Graces miss the school. However, Henry panics and locate her to the abandoned building. The building where Grace took him months ago. Henry saw her crying in her white wedding gown, which she supposedly wanted to wear on her wedding with Dom. Once again, Grace makes Henry aware of the fact of how deeply she is in love with Dom.

The love loop always repeats itself. Now Henry is traumatised of the breakup and maintains a distance away from her. As it was her first love, so it became tough for Henry to deal with the post-breakup stress. However, the path crossed again. They met each other on the final day of school. Grace encounters Henry and says that she is taking a year drop to make herself better. In the last meeting, Grace put something in Henry’s pocket. That ‘something’ was the poem that Henry burnt at the grave of Dom, after a breakup. Grace put it as a souvenir for their relationship. It clearly states that no matter how hard you make an effort to forget someone, it is just those special moments which always have an imprint in our soul.
